There are often months, years or decades where we are so incredibly content in our careers OR alternatively, too afraid of change or financially unable/unwilling to risk a shift. Then maybe one day, you wake up and realize you are dreading your work. Or maybe even worse…you realize you have been going through the motions of your life. Your job or business is paying the bills, but you feel little joy when you open the laptop, put on the uniform or get in your car. Could it be…time to make a career change?
So what the hell do you do now?
You take a leap.
But wait. There are a few things to consider before making a career change.
- Get clear on your financial bottom line. Do you need to bounce up financially or are you okay to take a pay cut while you pursue your passions? We highly recommend Know Your Worth’s home budgeting tool. It is super comprehensive and incredibly easy to use. And only $7!
- What do you REALLY want to be doing? Why? If you aren’t sure, start by asking some trusted friends and family what you are really good at. What do they come to you for advice on? What are you an expert in?
- Make connections and get educated. Find people do what you want to do. Maybe you hire a mentor or take classes at community college. Learn everything and anything. DIVE IN. Get your hands dirty. Get EXCITED!
- Set a date and a goal. Your GOAL is your DREAM with a DEADLINE. Set dates and hold yourself accountable.
- Communicate with your support system. Make sure that you are on the same page. If you don’t have one, enlist the services of a therapist. And shit, even if you do have a support system we should ALL have a therapist!
Now leap.
If you made it through those steps, you are probably as ready as you are ever going to be.
Leap. Make the career change.
You’ve got this.
