We all have those moments, especially since our worlds were flipped upside down in March of 2020, that we fail to see the opportunities available to us. We feel unworthy of success, of friendships, of growth. Whether you are a person that suffers from depression, or you are simply burnt out because things are constantly changing in the workplace, your feelings, while most likely false, are valid.
I spent January wrapped in a blanket of overwhelmed, unworthy, ick feelings. But I made it through and I have a few suggestions for how to dig yourself out of those bad days/weeks/months/years.
Set Healthy Boundaries
With your phone. At work. With your family. You have to set healthy boundaries. You do not need to be answering your clients or bosses DMs at 5am if it is making you frustrated. Does it make them bad people for sending you a message? Heck no!
For example: if my team member shoots me a text at 6am and I am up and excited to respond…why not. If I am half asleep and not in the mindset to jump in, then I wait until am. 99% of things that we feel are urgent, are not. The same goes for friends and family. That being said, my hard line is answering client questions via DM, text, email, voicemail, Facebook Chat…all the things at all hours of the day. Small business can be a whole other beast.
Practice Self Care…whatever that looks like for you
For me this has meant focusing on getting healthy without obsessing. Eating more veggies, moving more, taking my vitamins, doing my skincare. This does not need to be an all or nothing approach, but stop neglecting your mind and body and then expecting to wake up excited to chase after opportunity. Nothing makes us feel more hopeless than neglecting ourselves.
Stop Worrying So Much About What Other People Think
I mean, this one is obvious. So often we worry about what our family, friends, co-workers, second cousin twice removed’s boyfriends uncle will think. If you want to look for a new job, do it. If you want to pivot your business, do it. If you want to become a content creator, do it. Start exploring. Try new things. Embrace your inner child that wants to scream in Target just to see how it feels. Who cares if someone rolls their eyes at you or whispers behind your back? Go for it!
Make Time for Hobbies and Exploration
Do some things that make you happy that do not make you money. Painting, sewing, reading, listening to podcasts, watching Beyond Boss Insiders classes, creating TikTok content. Reexamine things that you used to enjoy and explore new ways to set your soul on fire.
Look, the bottom line is that you ARE worthy of opportunity and it DOES exist. While the world can feel upside down right now, there has arguably never been a better time to throw your hands up and say “I am NOT okay with living the same life over and over every single day”. Get up. Move your body and exercise your mind. Eat some chocolate. Phone a friend. I believe in you.
