When you think of 2020, the word grateful probably isn’t the first (or even the second) word that comes to mind. But even though this year was a hot mess, you can still wrap it up on a high note. Here are my three tips for finishing the year off strong.
1. Pause to think about how far you’ve come.
Even though this year wasn’t ideal, there’s still so much to be thankful for. Look around you. Are there any new skills you’ve gained in the past year, or any wins you’re proud of?
I’m thankful for supportive family and friends. I’m also proud that I was able to get a new full-time job during this global pandemic.
2. Make time for self-care.
Whatever self-care looks like for you, schedule it into your days to give yourself a chance to recharge and reset.
Don’t wait for a weekend or a vacation to unplug. Make time for self-care in your day-to-day life. Find a moment for yourself—whether that’s right when you wake up, over your lunch break or after work—to do something you really love.
For me, self-care is taking walks around the city when the weather isn’t terrible, or getting lost in a book. It’s also lighting a new candle to make working from home seem fresh and different.
Whatever activity you choose, you’ll be happy that you took time to pause and slow down for a little while.
3. Think about the year ahead
It can be hard to make concrete goals going into 2021, but it’s okay to not have things figured out. Life is always uncertain, but our current reality is a next-level journey into the unknown. So, if you don’t have a concrete plan for the coming months, I don’t blame you.
It’s still nice to have something to work towards, though. Write down one or two things you’d like to accomplish in the upcoming year. Then, check those goals a year from now to see if you’ve followed through. Striving for something specific and attainable can help keep you grounded in the midst of this chaos.
Finish off the Year Strong: Final Thoughts
Now that you have three ways to finish off the year strong, go out there and wrap your year up with confidence. There’s still a little over a week left in 2020. You’ve got this!
